Award Citation
June 21, 2006
The Florida Keys Council For People With Disabilities is pleased to present its award for
outstanding service to disabled persons in Monroe County to Sheila A. Barker.
This award recognizes her contributions to the more than 17,000 disabled people in
Monroe County in her roles as Director of Community Services and our County Liaison.
Her contributions have been instrumental in making this Council and the Community
Services Division she leads effective tools in the service of disabled persons. We
especially commend her for spearheading efforts within county government to remove
barriers to full participation by the estimated 5,500 persons with hearing impairment
residing in the Florida Keys. She was also instrumental in efforts to educate our disabled
population about hurricane hazards on our isolated islands.
Continually promoted to increasing responsibility during her eleven years of service to
Monroe County, Sheila combines courage, compassion and common sense to earn the
respect of alL
On behalf of the disabled citizens of the Florida Keys this plaque is presented to Sheila
Barker with sincere gratitude for her inspired leadership and dedicated service.
