AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval to apply, subsequent to approval by the County Attorney,
OMB, and Risk Management, a grant application prepared by Langton and Associates to the
Department of Community Affairs for a Statewide Competitive Grant to Construct or Improve the
Monroe County Emergency Operations Center, and authorization for the County Administrator to
execute any other required documentation in relation to the application process.
ITEM BACKGROUND: The Department of Community Affairs (DCA) gave notice on June 16,2006
of its intent to open a competitive grant application to construct or improve county emergency
operations centers. The application process deadline is August 15,2006. Our application will be for a
combined total of $7,240,000 (20,000 sq ft X $362 per sq ft to build at and above code requirements).
We plan to apply for this competitive grant and resubmit existing Hazard Mitigation Grant Program
(HMGP) application currently at DCA under the Notice of Funding Application (NOFA) for Hurricane
Wilma HMGP; the later has a deadline of September 15, 2006.
PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: On May 18,2005 the Board approved to apply and for
the Mayor to sign a grant application to the Florida Depmiment of Community Affairs for a Hazard
Mitigation Grant in the amount of $4,500,000, to relocate, design and construct a permanent and
dedicated Emergency Operations Center.
