Steven M. Torrence
Steve Torrence was born in Oak Harbor Washington July 1955 to a Davy family. He
grew up in the Pacific Northwest for most of his time with a short year in Anchorage
Alaska. He graduated from Ingraham. High School in Seattle Washington where he then
attended Seattle University Majoring in Religious Studies with a Specialty Certificate in
Alcohol and Drug Counseling. Steve competed his Masters Degree in Religion with a
minor in Social Work..
In 1994 he was Ordained in the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community
Churches and in 1985 was called to Pastor the Metropolitan Community Church in Key
West Florida. A small group of 12 members who met in the Key West Women's Clue
grew into a strong vibrant Church of over 150 members, owning their own building witi'
3 paid staff members. The Key West Church became a leader in the community
advocating for the disadvantaged, staring a daily food bank, and a holiday food basket
program. The Churches strong outreach programs were honored many times by city and
county government. Reverend Torrence tools the lead in the AIDS crisis by being one of
the only Clergy to visit AIDS patients in the Hospital. He became the Chaplain of
Florida Keys Community Hospital, and was also a Chaplain for Hospice.
Reverend Torrence was instrumental in organizing a non-profit Community Based AIDS
Organization (AIDS HELP) that to this day, continues to serve people in the entire
County. Reverend Terrence has served on many community boards such as Hospice of
the Florida. Keys, AIDS Help, Help Line, South Florida AIDS Consortium, Healthy Stan.,
and the Key West Business Guild. He also was appointed by Governor Lawton Child to
serve on the Lower Florida Keys Hospital Board and was Board Chairman. As a strong
advocate on health issues, Reverend Torrence was appointed by the County Commission
to serve on the State's Health and Human Services Board and continues to serve on the
Slate's Community Alliance Board.
Within his Denomination, Reverend Torrence was an official representative to the
National Council of Churches Commission on Faith and Order, Served on his
Denominational CredentWing Body, and is currently a part of their Judiciary.
After 15 years as a Church Pastor, he became a full time Officer in the Key West Police
Department. He is a fully sworn officer and is the Departments Chaplain, and has been?
Chaplain for over 15 years. After working in the patrol Division for 3 years, he now is
the Departments Community Relations Officer. He still serves on community boards
such as The MARC ,mouse and the Department of Juvenile Justice and is a member 0:7
Sunrise Rotary.
Reverend Torrence's passion is still in Ministry which he states, 'blot much has really
changed except for the uniform, I still fund a need and fill it and find a hurt and try to hoal
