AWARD CITATION
August 16, 2006
The Florida Keys Council For People With Disabilities is proud to present its Award for
outstanding service to people with disabilities to Aleisa McGuirl, Consumer Specialist
with the Center for Independent Living.
Whether it is knocking on the door of a Senator in Washington D. C., marching in a rally
to promote the rights of people with disabilities, or quietly holding the hand of a person
whose life seems to be falling apart, Aleisa is a true advocate for people with disabilities.
Aleisa worked tirelessly to assist disabled people who had lost many of their possessions
from last year's hurricane season and along with it, their independence. She has
successfully written and received a grant to teach people with disabilities how to avoid
being victims of crime. She also has received grants for an automatic ceiling lift, hand
controls for a car, and a brailer to name a few. While Aleisa has many noteworthy
accomplishments, the truest statement of her character and commitment to people with
disabilities in Monroe County is her steadfast determination, her quiet strength, and her
consistency, day -in and day -out, to do what needs to be done to improve the lives of
those around her. It is the everyday ordinary and often unnoticed acts that make Aleisa
the extraordinary woman that she is.
On behalf of the disabled citizens of the Florida Keys, this plaque is presented to Aleisa
McGuirl with sincere gratitude for her constant commitment and dedicated service to
people with disabilities.
