SUBJECT: Agenda Item Information
The HigherLove Mission Outreach, Inc. provides services to the homeless and poverty-
stricken communities of the Middle Keys. The Monroe County Transportation Program
currently has one surplus bus available which can carry up to eight ambulatory and two
wheelchair individuals. The current value of this bus is approximately $5,000. The last
time the County held a Request for Bids on a surplus bus no bids were received. Instead
of not utilizing and storing this vehicle, it is being recommended by staff to donate bus
#1917 to the HigherLove Mission Outreach, Inc.

Dear Ms. Frederick,
-Bi her"ve Mission Outreach, Inc. is a 501C-3 faith -based nova -profit organization created to seiTice the
unmet needs of the homeless and poverty-stricken communities unities of the Middle Keys. I IL IO equips
individuals with the tools necessary, to tame these important initial steps toward recovery; restoration and
self-sufficiency,
In 2003, 1-I.L O opened the HigherLove Mission Outreach Day Center, where chronic homeless
individuals can access a variety of services ranging from a fclll service soup kitchen, laundry- and shower
facilities, clothing depot, social service and employment referrals, family reunification and transportation
services. Included e in the ft-ansportation program is our coordination with the City of Marathon n and Monroe
Coo tv, to assist with hurricane evacuation of the homeless, boaters and those without a way out of the
Keys. However, our transportation services have been severely limited because we no longer passes a
working vehicle dedicated for this p urpose. We also transport people to medical appointments, shopping,
and various meetings when appropriate. We have relied on voluntem. and personal vehicles.
In that vein, it has been brought to our attenti€n by hill Duckworth of Monroe County Transportation, that
a county bus may be available. He suggested we contact your office e to discuss the possibility of having this
bus donated to H i herLove, similar to the donation of two buses to Habitat for I-Iumanity in Big pine last
year_
Hi h.erLove Mission Outreach operates can a shoe sting budget, with no full time paid staff members.
Donations are the lifeblood of our pram services which makes it imperative for us to solicit them.
whenever an opportunity presents itself A bus would permit gas to open up a host of other services to our
clients, most importantly, the hurricane evacuation component.
I look forward to speaking with you in further detail about this matter. F thank you in advance for your time
and consideration regarding this request, Please feel free to contact me at 305—i66-01?.
