The Florida Keys Council for People with Disabilities is pleased to pre~ent its Award for

Outstanding Service to disabled persons in Monroe County to Habitat: for Humanity of
!
Key West and the Lower Florida Keys. This award recognizes the important
contributions of this volunteer organization in improving the homesl by creating safe
I
living conditions for some of our poorest residents, the disabled. In a4dition to creating
affordable homeownership, Habitat repairs homes. In working on either new or existing
I
I
homes Habitat has included adaptive design practices ill order to create livable
environments for all. This practice is not an exception but a standard of practice.
Through both Habitat's new construetion and repair program h.omes ha\{"e gained
I
I
accessibility through the addition of wheelchair ramps and interior modifications.

This summer, volunteers turned a stack oflumber into the 54-foot ramplneeded to reunite
a family of three generations with their mother. For the first time in 2 years, this elderly
I,
resident was able to roll up the ramp and enter her home. Habitat has b~ilt approximately
twenty smaller ramps for other disabled Keys residents. After Hurrica~e Wilma, Habitat
I

actively assisted scores of our elderly and disabled in mold abatement\ and storm clean
I
up. On behalf of the disabled citizens of the Florida Keys this plaque s presented with
sincere gratitude for your achievements.
