ITEM BACKGROUND: PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: CONTRACT/AGREEMENT CHANGES: ST AFF RECOMMENDATIONS: TOTAL COST: INDIRECT COST: BUDGETED: Yes _No DIFFERENTIAL OF LOCAL PREFERENCE: COST TO COUNTY: SOURCE OF FUNDS: REVENUE PRODUCING: Yes No AMOUNT PER MONTH Year APPROVED BY: County Atty _ OMBlPurchasing _ Risk Management_ DOCUMENT ATION: Included ----'L- Not Required_ DISPOSITION: AGENDA ITEM # Revised 7/09 WHEREAS, the Monroe County Public Library is recognized as the oldest Library in South Florida, with recorded begirmings dated as far back as 1853, and; WHEREAS, in 1915 the Library became the foremost project of the Key West Woman's club with a total collection of some 1600 books, and; WHEREAS, in 1959, the establishment ofa county-wide Library system was approved by the Monroe County Board of Commissioners, and; WHEREAS, the Key West Library opening in 1959 was followed by the Key Largo Branch opening in 1962 and moving into its current location in 1989, the Marathon Branch beginning in 1962, the lslamorada Branch opening in 1966, and the Big Pine Key Branch established in 1995, and; WHEREAS, Monroe County Library cardholders now total more than 50% of the County population, enjoying a collection of over 200,000 items in a variety of formats, and; WHEREAS, the Monroe County Public Library has become recognized as a community center offering books, audio-visual materials, databases, internet access, and programs for all segments of the communities which it serves, and welcoming nearly half a million visitors last year, and; WHEREAS, the Monroe County Public Library is now celebrating its 50th Anniversary as an established County-wide Library system playing a vital role in supporting the quality of life for County residents and visitors; NOW, THEREFORE, T, George Neugent, Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, do hereby designate the week of November 19 through November 25,2009, as Monroe County Library 50th Anniversary week, and invite all citizens to visit their local branch Library and participate in the Open House celebration there.
