A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA
EXPRESSING CONCERNS OVER THE LARGE POPULATION
OF IGUANAS IN MONROE COUNTY AND REQUESTING THE
FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMISSION TO
ENACT REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE POSSESSION,
DISTRIBUTION OR RELEASE OF IGUANAS WITHIN THE
STATE; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE,
WHEREAS, Monroe County has become home to a large population of iguanas, as have other
cities in the region, with said population rapidly expanding; and
WHEREAS, Monroe County is an Area of Critical State Concern in which are found a number
of threatened and endangered species of animals, and plant life, the extent to which impact by
iguanas has not yet been determined; and
WHEREAS, such large numbers of iguanas have caused damage to property and created sanitary
nuisances within the county; and therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE
COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1. That the County Commission wishes to express their concerns to the Fish
and Wildlife Conservation Commission regarding the widespread
population of iguanas within the County and the region and request that
the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission designate iguanas as
"Reptiles of Concern" under the Florida Administrative Code, or take
such other measures to enact appropriate rules and regulations designed
to control the possession, distribution, release and propagation of iguanas
throughout the state.
Section 2. This Resolution shall become effective upon passage.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County,
Florida, at a meeting of said Board held on the day of July, 2008.
