AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Mayor's Proclamation declaring Monday, November 10,2008 as
Healthy Aging Day.
ITEM BACKGROUND: The Health Foundation of South Florida has provided $7.5 Million to
fund a five-year Healthy Aging Regional Collaborative of South Florida to promote the "Healthy
Aging Initiative", the launch of the program is November 10, 2008 at a Tri-County kick-off event
in Miami. The Healthy Aging Initiative will promote healthy aging and lifestyles, preventative
measures, and primary care, as a part of the" Aging In Place Initiative".
The National "Aging In Place Initiative", www.agJne:inplaceinitiativc.ore:, is a collaboration
of several national organizations, including Partners for Livable Communities (Partners) and the
National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (04a), and the MetLife Foundation.

HEALTHY AGING DAY
WHEREAS, the Health Foundation of South Florida has organized and funded a
Healthy Aging Regional Collaborative of South Florida to reach older adults in
Monroe County and provide with a selection of four evidence-based intervention
to improve their health; and
WHEREAS, this five-year $7.5 million initiative in its first year has awarded the
Florida Keys Area Health Education Center a grant for $120,200 for the keys to
healthy aging program; and
WHEREAS, the Health Foundation of South Florida strengthens our region to be
a beacon of innovative and effective multicultural approaches to health promotion
and health care. As a grant making foundation, its mission is to improve health
outcomes and quality community based programs for underserved individuals in
Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties by focusing on various initiatives
and programs including healthy aging and healthy lifestyles, preventive
measures and primary care. Since 1993, the Foundation awarded more than
$78 million in grants and direct program support; and
WHEREAS, the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners supports
programs to improve and enhance the health and lifestyle of our older adults in
our communities;
NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Charles "Sonny" McCoy, with the
power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, declare Monday, November 10,
2008 as
HEAL THY AGING DAY IN MONROE COUNTY

is a non-profit leadership organization working to improve the

and build public/private coalitions to further their goals.

"'h'jut In 2004, Partners for Uvable Communities and the National Area
Agencies on Aging began working directly with nine laboratory
[-j!')lor} communities to assist them in advancing policies, programs and
services to promote Aging ill Place. What we have learned from
f- ~: \ r (, these efforts is that many community leaders are taking positive
steps toward a livable community with no age boundaries, but other
communities are unsure where to begin.
In 2006, Partners and n4a collaborated with the International City
and County Management Association (lCMA), the Natlonall_eague of
Cities (N LC) an d the Natlona I Association of Counties (NACo), with
support from the MetUfe Foundation, to conduct a survey of 10,000
US cities and counties to determine how they were addressing the

To help those communities that have begun the journey and those
yet to take the first step, Partners and n4a joined again with ICMA,
NLC and NACo and with additional support from MetLife Foundation
to produce a comprehensive toolkit, A Blueprint for ActIOn.
Developing Livable Communities for All Ages The Blueprint will be
used to facilitate community-wide discussion, assessment and action
to ensure that America's cities and counties take advantage of the
demographic transition to become more livable for all ages. Copies of
