YEARS OF SERVICE AWARD
JOHN BROWN
HEAD OF TECHNICAL SERVICES
MONROE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY
KEY WEST BRANCH
COMMUNITY SERVICES DIVISION
John Brown has led the Technical Services Unit of the Monroe County
Public Library for twenty years. In that time he has had the responsibility of
overseeing all the new library materials that come into the system, processing them
for the collections in five branches, and making sure that they have been cataloged
for easy access by staff and patrons.
Under his leadership, the Technical Services unit has processed over 200,000
new books for the library, in addition to videotapes, audiotapes, and most recently
DVD's.
When the time came for the library to make the transition from a manual to
an automated circulation system, John again led the way, working with staff across
the system as well as with vendors to effect the necessary changes with the least
negative impact on staff and patrons. His efforts were a major factor in the
changeover taking place as smoothly and seamlessly as possible, despite a number of
administrative and technical staff changes during that period.
For the past two years, John has been active in the CPM coursework, and
will graduate from that program this June.
Throughout his career with the Library, John has kept the core of the library
processes, the technical services program, functioning smoothly and efficiently.
Though his contributions have always been behind the scenes, there is no doubt that
he has performed essential functions in a way that has benefited all library patrons
for 20 years, and we are glad to have this opportunity to thank him publicly for his
years of excellent service to Monroe County.
