2024 Proposal to Key West International Airport for Support of Special
Olympics Florida in Monroe County
The mission of Special Olympics Florida is to provide year-round sports training
and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual
disabilities who wish to participate, giving them continuing opportunities to
develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in
the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special
Olympics athletes, and the community.
The ultimate objective of Special Olympics Florida is to help people with
intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of
society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate
their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing
the public's awareness of their capabilities and needs.
Special Olympics Florida offers activities for all ability levels and serves both
children and adults. Special Olympics Florida also provides critical health
screenings as well as life-changing leadership opportunities for the athletes. All
Special Olympics Florida programs and services are at no cost to the athletes or
their families. Special Olympics Florida, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

In Monroe County, as of January 2024, Special Olympics Florida serves 650+ youth
ages eight and above with and without intellectual disabilities in 12 sports, in
schools, and in the community. We also offer a variety of developmental programs
for ages two and above, as well as athlete leadership training. Our county
participation has grown tremendously over the past years. In 2013, we served 80
athletes in the Key West area only, and zero served in other areas of the Keys. In
January of 2023, we served 528 athletes in all areas, lower, middle, and upper keys,
giving us a growth of 122 participants in one calendar year.
