RESOLUTION NO. 137-1996
A RESOLUTION OF THE MONROE COUNTY BOARD OF
COMMISSIONERS SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE
FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT
SECURITY TO DEVELOP AND ESTABLISH OPPORTUNITIES
FOR COMMERCIAL AQUACULTURE VENTURES IN THE
FLORIDA KEYS.
WHEREAS, commercial fishing interests have been significantly impacted
by the recent passage of the State constitutional amendment requiring a ban on
certain types of net fishing gear; and
WHEREAS, commercial fishing activities have also been curtailed in the
harvest of "live rock," the use of wire fish traps, and in other fishing industries and
fishing methods; and
WHEREAS, diversifying opportunities for the commercial fishing industry
to offset these new restrictions is important to the welfare of commercial
fisherman and to the general economy of the Florida Keys; and
WHEREAS, commercial aquaculture may be one of a number of ways to re-
diversify the Commercial fishing industry; :;; ~

The Board of County Commissioners:

Believe in the need for a strong and diverse Commercial Fishing Industry in the
Florida Keys;
Support any and all efforts of the Florida Department of Labor and Employment
Security or any other entity which would seek to energize the Commercial Fishing
Industry;

Conceptually supports the reasonable' and permissible use of State Sovereignty
Submerged Lands and other appropriate public lands for the development of
aquaculture projects; and
Applauds the Department's effort to develop an aquaculture feasibility study for
the Florida Keys, at no direct cost to the citizens of Monroe County, which would
help determine the effectiveness of expanding aquaculture opportunities in the
Florida Keys
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners,
Monroe County, Florida at a regular meeting of said Board held on this 20th day of
March, A.D., 1996.
