Mayor's Proclamation declaring November 2024 as Monroe County Smoking Cessation and Lung
Cancer Awareness Month and recognizing the efforts of the Florida Keys Area Health Education
Centers (AHEC).
ITEM BACKGROUND:
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., accounting for about 1 in 5 of all cancer
deaths. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers. November
is National Lung Cancer Awareness Month,paired with the Great American Smokeout on the third
Thursday. Keys AHEC provides tobacco cessation services for free in Monroe County through
meetings, counseling sessions, and nicotine replacement therapy and has helped thousands of Monroe
County residents quit smoking. Those who wish to quit are encouraged to visit KeysAhec.org and begin
their cessation journey today.

DECLARING NOVEMBER 2024 AS MONROE COUNTY SMOKING CESSATION AND
LUNG CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
AND RECOGNIZING THE EFFORTS OF THE FLORIDA KEYS AREA HEALTH EDUCATION
CENTERS (AHEC) TO HELP RESIDENTS QUIT SMOKING
WHEREAS, tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of death in the U.S.; and
WHEREAS, the United States Department of Health and Human Services has found
tobacco smoke to contain over 7,000 toxic and carcinogenic chemicals; and
WHEREAS, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., accounting for
about 1 in 5 of all cancer deaths; and
WHEREAS, November is National Lung Cancer Awareness Month, paired with the Great
American Smokeout on the third Thursday; and
WHEREAS, Key West International Airport joined smoke-free airports around the globe in
2023 by closing its outdoor smoking patio during ongoing construction and continues to
improve service with its new concourse set to open in 2025; and
WHEREAS, Key West International Airport supports AHEC through its community
relations program in the amount of$2,000 annually; and
WHEREAS, Keys AHEC provides tobacco cessation services for free in Monroe County
through meetings, counseling sessions and nicotine replacement therapy; and
WHEREAS, Keys AHEC has helped thousands of Monroe County residents quit smoking
and encourages those who wish to quit to visit KeysAhec.org and begin their cessation
journey today;
NOW THEREFORE, be it proclaimed November 2024 as
MONROE COUNTY SMOKING CESSATION AND
LUNG CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
