MONTHLY ACTIVITY REPORT—January
Number of services provided: 52 phone calls, 54 emails, 2 one-on-one consults, 3 office
visits/visits to clients, 23 learning events with 1,249 participants, 6 media submissions, and 125
publications distributed. Total Budget for FY 24/25: $316,330; Year to Date Expenditures and
Encumbrances: $168,545; Remaining Balance: $147,785; Percentage of budget spent and/or
encumbered year-to-date: 52%
The County Extension Director/Family & Community Development Agent accomplished the
following activities:
• Alicia led the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy, a Climate working
group focused on fostering climate-resilient communities. This effort includes Extension
administrators, state specialists, and agents from across the U.S. The group analyzed the
Extension Climate Action Plan and developed two areas of focus for the coming year.
The focus areas include strengthening collaboration with federal programs and
community organizations as well as developing community-centric planning.
• Alicia met with the City of Homestead, to interview staff about their experience as part of
the Climate Navigator Network.
• Alicia presented resources and technical assistance for community resilience planning at
the Southeast Florida Climate Compacts, 16th Annual Climate Leadership Summit. The
Summit was attended by 372 climate leaders, elected officials, municipal staff, and
consultants, all working toward resilience planning.
• Alicia helps to organize science day at a K-8 school. She conducted a lava lamp
experiment with the kids to show how oil and water interact. She discussed the
importance of keeping our ocean and bay water clean.
• Alicia wrote an article about holiday travel tips. Some good tips anytime you travel are:
firstly,plan for something to go wrong, arrive at the airport early, use travel apps, and
finally,pack light. Then, edit your bag and pack less.
The Florida Sea Grant Marine Extension Agent accomplished the following activities:
• Shelly worked to finalize the agenda for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary
Water Quality Protection Program meeting and invited Dr. John Bowden from the

University of Florida to speak about PFAS in Florida Keys drinking water. Save the
Date: March 12 in Marathon.
• Shelly reported on 2024 accomplishments of the Sea Grant aquatic invasive species
working group about social media campaigns, new websites, and press releases for the
potential invasive Pulse Corals, which are currently in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and
northern Cuba. Shelly provided content to the new FWC page "Invasive Soft Corals"—
link https:Hmyfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/invertebrates/pulse-corals/ and the
Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment in the Caribbean on The Invasive Xeniid Soft
Coral Exchange at https://www.agrra.org/the-unomia-learning-exchange/. Thankfully, the
underwater surveillance network we have created has not reported these species.
• Florida's Coral Reef Resilience Program is a statewide, highly collaborative public-
private partnership to facilitate the recovery of Florida's Coral Reef into a resilient and
self-sustaining ecosystem. Shelly continues to provide leadership of the Communication
Team since 2019 and the new website is a terrific repository of technical and public
documents at fcrrp.org.
• Shelly spoke on Morning Magazine about the Florida Friendly Angler program. This is a
free short online course for recreational anglers looking to improve their fishing skills
and sustainable boating that is available in English and Spanish. This course won the
2024 Superior Outreach Programming Award from NOAA Sea Grant Extension
Assembly.
• One-on-one consultations. Shelly met with an individual looking to acquire a quarry
property and the owner of a portion of Anclote Key to discuss aquaculture opportunities.
The Environmental Horticulture Program accomplished the following activities:
• Monroe County Master Gardeners Volunteers conducted five plant clinics with
participation ranging from 4 to 15 people per clinic. These events provided essential
opportunities for the community to learn about horticulture and environmentally friendly
practices.
• Monroe County Master Gardener Volunteers managed the Virtual Help Desk and were
able to assist 8 community members with questions on proper landscaping, planting,
diseases and pests.
• Monroe County Master Gardener Volunteers partnered with several organizations to host
the Native Plant Sale/Children's Art Workshop/Composting Workshop at the Key West
Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden. They also hosted a Merry Citrus Event at the Key
Largo Library where participants learned how to make festive orange and clove
pomanders for the holiday season.
The County Extension Coordinator and Program Specialist 11 accomplished the following
activities:
• Brynn certified 3 medical professionals from CHI in American Heart Association CPR
and 2 medical professionals from various organizations in the BLS (Basic Life Support)
AHA course.
• Brynn spoke on the radio about her January CPR and First Aid Courses offered to the
public. She also discussed the importance of learning this life-saving skill.

• Brynn volunteered for 2 days at the 16Ih Annual Climate Leadership Summit. She
assisted in registering climate leaders, elected officials, municipal staff, and consultants
who attended this event.
• Brynn wrote an article about last-minute environmentally friendly Christmas gifts that
was featured in the Upper Keys Weekly and KeysWeekly.com.

Fire Rescue
■ Crew members from Stations 7 and 8 participated in the "Flight to the North Pole" event at
the Key West International Airport and provided fire safety information.
■ Crewmembers from Station 9 hosted a visit from a group of home school students and their
parents and made a presentation about"Smoke Alarms" at Fire Station 9, Big Coppitt Key.
■ Crew members from Station 22 participated in the "Santa at the Park" event hosted by the
Parks & Beaches department at Harry Harris Park in Tavernier.
■ Participated in the Holiday Parade in Key West from Truman Avenue to Duval Street.
■ Provided Holiday Parades with Crew members driving Fire Engines and support vehicles
for the families of the Stock Island, Big Coppitt Key, Cudjoe Key, Ramrod Key, Summerland
Key, Little Torch Key, Long Key, Layton, Tavernier, Big Pine Key, Conch Key and Duck Key
communities.
Trauma Star/ EMS
■ The Medical Director hosted a meeting with the fire chiefs for Monroe County, the city of
Key West and the city of Marathon to discuss improving collaboration and mutual aid
responses and patient care for the community.
■ Conducted Quality Assurance meetings with Lower Keys Medical Center and Baptist Health
(Fisherman's/Mariners) hospitals.
■ Quality Assurance (QA) / Quality Management (QM) team continued to review all patient
care reports completed for the month.
■ Conducted a Flight team monthly meeting with the Medical Director which included quality
assurance and documentation guidelines and feedback, upcoming training and
communications.
■ Implemented a monthly meeting with EMS division, field personnel and the Medical
Director, and discussed the progress of provisional paramedics and best practices.
■ Two (2) Paramedic completed the department's Provisional Paramedic Program and
successfully passed the final assessment testing with the Medical Director.
■ One (1) Flight Paramedic completed the department's provisional flight crew member
program and successfully passed the final assessment testing with the Medical Director.

■ Participated with the EYW's Children's Christmas Party- Flight to the North Pole,with
apparatus and a fire prevention display.
■ Participated with the MCFR Community Santa Parades in Big Coppitt and Big Pine areas.
■ Attended the Wildlife Hazard Management meeting.
■ Attended each of the EYW Operations Meetings, Construction Meetings,Airlines Meeting
and Airport Tenant Meeting.
■ Began preparations for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Annual Safety
Inspection, scheduled for January 13 - 17, 2025.
Fire/EMS Training
■ Conducted facility and live fire training for thirty-two (32) firefighters from Stations 22, 18,
17, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8 and 7. This is an ISO requirement for firefighters and the training
provided maintains the state fire certifications for personnel.
■ Facilitated a Critical Incident Management Training class with the Key West Fire Department
and IAFF Critical Incident Management training for 27 personnel from several departments.
■ Hosted a "Family Day" event for the "Hot Shots"Academy students,who showcased their
firefighting skills to family and friends. The Fire Training Academy officers provided a
Graduation Ceremony as part of this event.
■ Facilitated final testing for firefighter certification by the state of Florida Bureau of Fire
Standards and Training. Of the 21 "Hot Shots" students, 20 passed the final tests to receive a
"Florida Firefighter" certification, successfully completing the Firefighter Minimum
Standards Course (Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 11).
■ Completed the Annual Training Plan for 2025 which will be distributed internally.
FireMarshal's Office
■ Provided twelve (12) Fire Prevention and Outreach events with community
participation.
■ Conducted Annual Fire and Life Safety inspections for commercial properties from Key
Largo to Stock Island.
■ Conducted Vacation Rental Fire and Life Safety inspections for residential properties.
■ Conducted Plans Reviews and Inspections for New Construction and Renovation Permits
for the building departments in Ocean Reef,the Upper Keys, Middle Keys, and the Lower
Keys.
■ Held a monthly staff meeting with members of the Fire Marshal's Office.
■ Issued six (6) Fireworks permits for events on Little Palm Island,the Key Largo Boat
Parade, Ocean Reef, Bakers Cay Resort, the Bungalows and Hawks Cay.
■ Fulfilled nine (9) public records requests for documents related to fires and incidents,
code and fire and life safety inspections, and property fire investigations.
