ITEM BACKGROUND: Sexual Assault Month is observed nationally each April to promote education and raise awareness of the fact that sexual violence is widespread and affects individuals of every age, race, gender and socioeconomic background. Monroe County is committed to preventing sexual violence and urges all residents, businesses, and organizations to join in this observance by working together toward a safer, healthier community for all. DOCUMENTATION: Proclamation - Sexual Assault Awarness Month April 2025.docx FINANCIAL IMPACT: N/A 13 MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month is observed nationally each April to promote education and raise awareness of the fact that sexual violence is widespread and affects individuals of every age, race, gender and socioeconomic background; and WHEREAS, Monroe County recognizes the profound impact that sexual violence has on survivors, their families, and our community as a whole, including physical, emotional and psychological effects that can last a lifetime; and WHEREAS, Christina's Courage, the only Rape Crisis Center in Monroe County, provides survivors with a safe and confidential environment for services including forensic examinations, victim advocacy, law enforcement interviews and counseling; and WHEREAS, the Center operates on donations and the support of volunteers at a confidential location donated by the City of Key West, and has a mental health counselor and sexual assault nurse examiners, one of whom single-handedly conducts 95% of all forensic exams in Monroe County each year; and WHEREAS, every member of our community plays a role in the prevention of sexual violence which is only possible through education, intervention, and community efforts that empower individuals to speak out against harmful behaviors and support survivors in their journey toward healing and justice; and NOW, THEREFORE, I Jim Scholl, Mayor of Monroe County, do hereby proclaim April 2025, as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, reaffirming Monroe County's commitment preventing sexual violence and urging all residents, businesses, and organizations to join in this observance by working together toward a safer, healthier community for all.
