Lieutenant Tony Araque is being recognized for 15 years of service with Monroe County Fire
Rescue. His son Firefighter Eliseo Araque is here with him today to celebrate this milestone.
Originally from Apure, Venezuela, Araque moved to the Keys in 2000 and began a car washing
business and volunteering at the Big Coppitt fire station. He enjoyed being at the fire station
and helping others, which led him to start his career in the fire service. He completed his Fire 1
and 2 certifications at our very own Joe London Fire Academy in Grassy Key and EMT at the
College of the Florida Keys. Later, he became a Paramedic through the Southeastern Medical
Academy, and he recently obtained his associate's degree in emergency medical services.
For most of his tenure, Lt. Araque has served at Fire Station 7, servicing the Key West
International Airport. Currently, he is the C Shift Lieutenant at Station 9, servicing the Big
Coppitt Key area.
Lt. Araque said, "Fifteen years ago I chose a life of service; not for recognition, but to make a
difference one call at a time."
