AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Discussion and direction for Monroe County Fire Rescue's
participation in annual neighborhood holiday Parades
ITEM BACKGROUND:
Fire Rescue traditionally holds neighborhood parades during December. Long ago these events were
done with volunteer fire fighters. Several years ago, volunteer participation waned and the Department
began paying overtime for the fire fighters to participate in the events. Substantial budget cuts during
development of the FY26 budget resulted in decreased overtime availability.
The Fire Chief made a financially prudent decision to have on-shift fire fighters to visit neighborhoods
with the fire trucks; but not to publish and hold parades around neighborhoods that require overtime
payment.
Citizens have expressed their disappointment in this decision, and Commissioners have asked for a
discussion on this matter. Further, Union President Hodek indicated he has several volunteers willing
to participate in the parades.
For 2025 using fire fighter volunteers, the cost of the events will be: ($295.49).
As a comparison, using paid fire fighters yielded an average cost of ($11,900.46).
