ITEM BACKGROUND: National County Government Month, held each April, is a celebration of county government. Since 1991, the National Association of Counties (NACo) has encouraged counties to use this month of recognition to actively promote our roles and responsibilities in serving residents. This April, we would like to highlight the important role Monroe County plays in providing essential services, protecting natural resources, and supporting the quality of life for residents and visitors throughout the Florida Keys. Mayor's Proclamation declaring April 2026 as National County Government Month in Monroe County. MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION NATIONAL COUNTY GOVERNMENT MONTH- APRIL 2026 WHEREAS, the nation's 3,069 counties serving more than 330 million Americans provide essential services to create healthy, safe and vibrant communities; and WHEREAS,counties fulfill a vast range of responsibilities and deliver services that touch nearly every aspect of our residents' lives; and WHEREAS, counties as intergovernmental partners enact local, state and federal programs to address the needs of all residents; and WHEREAS,Monroe County and all counties take pride in our responsibility to protect and enhance the health, wellbeing and safety of our residents in efficient and cost-effective ways; and WHEREAS, the nation is celebrating 250 years of independence this year, and counties have a long and rich history of serving residents; and WHEREAS, each year since 1991 the National Association of Counties has encouraged counties across the country to elevate awareness of county responsibilities, programs and services; and WHEREAS,Monroe County provides essential services uniquely tailored to a geographically isolated island chain, including emergency management, evacuation planning, and infrastructure resilience critical to protecting residents and visitors in the Florida Keys; and WHEREAS, Monroe County plays a vital role in preserving the delicate ecosystems of the Florida Keys through land conservation, water quality initiatives, and partnerships that protect our natural resources for future generations. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA does hereby designate April as NATIONAL COUNTY GOVERNMENT MONTH and we encourage all residents, business, and visitors to learn more about vital services and programs provided by county government, and to join in acknowledging the essential role county government plays in maintaining the quality of life in the Florida Keys.
