MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION Florida Mosquito Control Awareness Week April 19-25, 2026 WHEREAS, mosquitoes have historically posed significant threats to public health, quality of life, and economic vitality of the state of Florida by transmitting diseases such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, as well as West Nile virus; and WHEREAS, effective mosquito control is ESSENTIAL for protecting residents and visitors, by fostering tourism, safeguarding outdoor recreation, and ensuring the continued vitality of Florida's communities; and WHEREAS, Florida Mosquito Control Awareness Week, observed April 19-25, 2026, serves to inform and educate the public about the importance of mosquito control, personal protection measures, and the role of professional mosquito control programs in disease prevention; and WHEREAS, the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District has demonstrated a longstanding, steadfast commitment to protecting public health through science-based mosquito surveillance, control operations,public education, and innovative research initiatives; and WHEREAS, the dedicated professionals of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District work tirelessly to reduce mosquito populations, respond to emerging threats, and enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors throughout the Florida Keys; and WHEREAS, community participation, including eliminating standing water and taking preventive measures, is a critical component of successful mosquito control efforts; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that I, Michelle Lincoln, Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, on behalf of the Board of County Commissioners and the citizens of Monroe County, do hereby recognizes April 19-25, 2026, as FLORIDA MOSQUITO CONTROL AWARENESS WEEK and encourages all residents to learn about mosquito prevention, support local mosquito control efforts, and join in recognizing the important contributions of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District.
