ITEM BACKGROUND: Each May, our nation comes together to honor the courage, sacrifice and dedication of law enforcement officers. Originally established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, Law Enforcement Memorial Week recognizes officers who have given their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve and protect our communities with dedication and courage. MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION LAW ENFORCEMENT MEMORIAL WEEK May 10 — 16, 2026 WHEREAS, law enforcement officers steadfastly provide an extraordinary level of service for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, under often-difficult and dangerous circumstances; and WHEREAS, law enforcement officers and their loved ones must live with the possibility of life-threatening violence every day they are on the job; and WHEREAS, as a consequence of this danger, many law enforcement officers have made the supreme sacrifice for their communities; and WHEREAS, hundreds of courageous public safety officers lost their lives in the tragedies of September 11, 2001; and WHEREAS, law enforcement officers and grateful citizens pause every year to honor the memory of these officers and the officers who have lost their lives serving the citizens of Monroe County NOW, THEREFORE, I, Michelle Lincoln, Mayor of Monroe County, do hereby declare May l Othh— 16th, 2026 as LAW ENFORCEMENT MEMORIAL WEEK In the "Southernmost County of the Continental United States". I urge all citizens, residents and visitors of Monroe County to remember those law enforcement officers who fell holding the thin,blue line that stands between good and evil I invite our community to attend the Law Enforcement Ceremony on Friday, May 15th at 5:00 p.m. at the Bayview Park in Key West.
