ITEM BACKGROUND: This agenda item provides a preliminary overview and framework for Monroe County's participation in America's 250th Anniversary (Semiquincentennial),branded locally as America 250 Florida Keys, and seeks board direction on event planning, coordination, and funding. The proposed effort is a countywide, multi-month celebration spanning May through November 2026, incorporating partnerships with municipalities, organizations, chambers, and the Tourist Development Council (TDC). The goal is to highlight the Florida Keys' unique culture,history, and community spirit while aligning with statewide and national America 250 initiatives. Staff have begun coordinating with the TDC, local municipalities, community organizations, and event partners to identify opportunities to enhance existing events and create new, destination-level experiences. PRELIMINARY EVENT FRAMEWORK The current concept includes a series of anchor and supporting events across the Keys: Kickoff Event—May 4, 2026 (Big Pine Key)— TDC Lead Event(Already Funded Through TDC) A signature"Florida Keys-style"proclamation event is proposed, featuring a business-suit paddleboard gathering of elected officials, community partners, and media to launch the celebration. Independence Day Celebrations—July 3-4, 2026— Chamber/Rotaries (Already Funded/Planned Through Outside Organizations) Existing Fourth of July events throughout the Keys, including Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key, and Key West parades and fireworks Signature Events to be Funded(Conceptual—Late Summer/Early Fall 2026) Event Date Area Approx.$ Contact Notes.
