AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Recognition of Marathon International Airport for receiving the
2026 SEC-AAAE Runway Project of the Year Award.
ITEM BACKGROUND: The SEC-AAAE Runway Project of the Year Award is presented by the
Southeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives in partnership with American
Association of Airport Executives. It recognizes outstanding achievement in the planning, design,
construction, and delivery of airfield infrastructure projects across the southeastern United States. This
award specifically honors runway projects that demonstrate:
• Engineering and construction excellence
• Phasing strategies that minimize operational disruption
• Safety enhancements, including compliance with FAA standards (such as runway-taxiway
separation and airfield geometry improvements)
• Efficient project delivery
• Operational impact: improving reliability, capacity, and long-term sustainability of the airport.
Marathon International Airport Recognition
Florida Keys Marathon International Airport has received this award for its Runway 07/25 project,
completed in October 2025. The award was presented at the SEC-AAAE Annual Conference on
March 29 in Savannah, Georgia, and reflects:
• A critical investment in airfield safety and compliance
• A project that required careful coordination in a constrained island environment
• Successful execution that maintained airport operations while delivering major infrastructure
improvements
The award places Marathon among the top-performing airport projects in the Southeast region,
highlighting the airport's commitment to safety,resilience, and operational excellence.
