ITEM BACKGROUND:
Parks and Recreation Month, observed each July, recognizes the vital role parks, recreation programs,
and natural resources play in enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors. This proclamation
celebrates the dedication of Monroe County's Parks and Beaches Department and its commitment to
providing safe, accessible recreational opportunities,preserving natural spaces, and promoting
healthy, active communities throughout the Florida Keys.

Parks and Recreation Month
July 2026
WHEREAS,parks and recreation programs are an integral part of communities throughout Monroe County,
providing opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy healthy lifestyles, connect with nature, and strengthen
community bonds; and
WHEREAS,parks,beaches, trails, athletic facilities, community centers, and recreational programs contribute
significantly to the quality of life enjoyed by residents throughout the Florida Keys; and
WHEREAS, Monroe County's parks and recreation professionals work year-round to provide safe, accessible,
and inclusive recreational opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities while helping preserve the
natural beauty and unique environment of our island community; and
WHEREAS,participation in recreational activities promotes physical health, mental well-being, environmental
stewardship, and social engagement, benefiting both individuals and the community as a whole; and
WHEREAS,parks and recreation programming and education activities, such as out-of-school time
programming,youth sports and environmental education, are critical to childhood development; and
WHEREAS,parks and recreation increases a community's economic prosperity through increased property
values, expansion of the local tax base, increased tourism, the attraction and retention of businesses, and crime
reduction; and
WHEREAS; the National Recreation and Park Association has designated July as Parks and Recreation Month
to celebrate the vital role that parks and recreation play in building stronger, healthier, and more vibrant
communities; and
WHEREAS; Monroe County recognizes and appreciates the dedicated parks and recreation staff, volunteers,
community partners, and advocates whose efforts enhance the lives of residents and visitors throughout the
county.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT THE MONROE COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS HEREBY PROCLAIM JULY 2026 AS
PARKS AND RECREATION MONTH
in Monroe County, and encourages all residents to explore local parks,participate in recreational programs,
enjoy the outdoors, and recognize the valuable contributions of parks and recreation professionals in making
Monroe County a healthier, happier, and more connected community.
