Joint City/County Commissioners

Key West
A Special Meeting of the Monroe County Board of
County Commissioners and the Key West Board of City
Commissioners convened at 10:00 a.m. on the above date at
City Hall, Angela and Simonton Streets, Key West. Present
and answering to roll call were Commissioner Wilhelmina
Harvey, Commissioner Douglas Jones, Commissioner Eugene
Lytton, and Mayor John Stormont. Absent from the meeting
was Commissioner Michael Puto. The following members of the
City Commission were present: Commissioner Sally Lewis,
Commissioner Virginia Panico, Commissioner Harry Powell,
Commissioner Jimmy Weekley, and Mayor Tbny Tarracino. Also
present were Danny L. Kolhage, County Clerk; Josephine
Parker, City Clerk; Randy Ludacer, County Attorney; Tbm
Brown, County Administrator; Ron Herron, Interim City
Manager; County and City Staff; members of the Press and
Radio; and the general public.
All stood for the Invocation and Pledge of
Allegiance.
Paul Cates and representatives of CH2M Hill made a
presentation of the current status of the City of Key West
concerning solid waste.
Tom Brown, County Administrator, made a presen-
tation of the current status of Monroe County concerning
solid waste.
Staff.
Mr. Brown discussed Option #1 as presented by the
Bill Hutchinson of CH2M Hill discussed Option #2.
Mr. Brown discussed Option #3.
Mr. Hutchinson discussed miscellaneous con-
siderations concerning solid waste disposal in Monroe County
and the City of Key West.
The Joint Commissions proceeded to discuss all of
the options. Motion was made by Commissioner Lytton and
seconded by Mayor Stormont to authorize County Administrator
Tom Brown to negotiate with Waste Management, Inc. and
Broward County after the 15th of May concerning the hauling
of solid waste out of Monroe County and bring the results of
those negotiations back to the Board. Roll call vote was
unanimous.
David Ornstein in the audience objected to the pro-
hibition of public input. Mayor Stormont advised that his
request was out of order since it involved waste sites which
were not being discussed.
The Joint Commissions discussed a possible meeting
in the second week of June.
There being no further business, the meeting was
adjourned.
