A Special Meeting of the Monroe County Board of
County Commissioners convened at 2:00 p.m. on the above date
in the Commission Chambers at 310 Fleming Street in Key
West. Present and answering to roll call were Commissioner
William Freeman, Commissioner Jerry Hernandez, Jr.,
Commissioner Michael Puto, Commissioner John Stormont, and
Mayor Eugene Lytton. Also present were Danny L. Kolhage,
Clerk; Randy Ludacer, County Attorney; Tom Brown, County
Administrator; County Staff; members of the Press and Radio;
and the general public.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the
Conch Republic Offshore Power Boat Race and TOC funding.
Commissioner Hernandez discussed the funding
request for the Conch Republic Offshore Power Boat Race.
John Parks of the Advisory Committee advised the
Commission of the procedure used by the Advisory Committee
to allocate funding.
Mayor Lytton recognized Dr. Otho Cox, TOC Board
member and member of the Board of City Electric.
Sandy Higgs of Keys Advertising & Marketing, TDC
Administrator, discussed the allocations and the problems
with the Department of Revenue in the reporting and remit-
tance of collections in the current year.
The Board entered into a general discussion.
Commissioner Puto read a letter dated today from
him to the Board relative to this matter.
John Carbonell of the Conch Republic Offshore Power
Boat Race Association addressed the Board. Pat Williams of
the NPBA spoke to the Board in support of Mr. Carbonell's
request. Don DeFeo, President of the Key West Hotel-Motel
Association, also spoke in support of the request. Monica
Haskell of the Key West Literary Seminar requested similar
consideration for the Seminar's project. John Parks; Linda
O'Brien, member of the TOC; and Mike Horne of the NPBA also
addressed the Board.
Motion was made by Commissioner Hernandez and
seconded by Commissioner Freeman to request that the
Advisory Board of the Tourist Development Council review the
allocation and consider the possibility of adding $25,000.00
to the recommendation for funding of the Conch Republic
Offshore Power Boat Race by the Advisory Committee. Motion
carried unanimously.
There being no further business, the meeting was
adjourned.
