Special Meeting
Board of County Commissioners
Friday, May 23, 1986
Key West
A Special Meeting of the Monroe County Board of
County Commissioners convened at 10:00 a.m. on the above
date at Florida Keys Memorial Hospital in Key West. Present
and answering to roll call were Commissioner Alison Fahrer,
Commissioner William Freeman, and Mayor Wilhelmina Harvey.
Absent from the meeting were Commissioners John Stormont and
Ed Swift. Also present were Danny L. Kolhage, Clerk1
Kermit Lewin, County Administrator1 Calvin Allen, Assistant
County AttorneY1 Louis LaTorre, Social Services Director1
members of the Press and Radi01 and the general public.
Beverly Rymer, representing the South Florida
Peri-Natal Network addressed the Board concerning the need
for pre-natal services in Monroe County.
Helen Swallow, C.N.M., described the current state
of obstetric care as it relates to high-risk and problem
pregnancies.
Curt Blair of the Health Council of South Florida1
Claudia McEwen, an obstetrician in the Marathon area1 and
Anne King of the Monroe County Health Clinic addressed the
Board concerning the problems associated with pre-natal
health care.
After discussion by Board members and all present,
motion was made by Commissioner Fahrer and seconded by
Commissioner Freeman requesting Dr. Bofil to work with a
committee to be appointed by the Mayor to develop a proposal
and criteria for a pre-natal care program and report back to
the Board of County Commissioners. Roll call vote was una-
nimous.
There being no further business, the meeting was
adjourned.
