Resolution 420-2001 Mayor 6eorge Neugent RESOLUTION NO. 420 -2001 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA IN SUPPORT Of THE OCEAN WILDERNESS PLEDGE WHEREAS, Earth is an ocean planet, whose oceans cover 70% of the planets surface and which sustain life on Earth; and WHEREAS, America's oceans are public waters and the natural resources and wildlife therein are public resources held in tNst for all the people; and WHEREAS, our oceans have already been harmed by human activities, endangering the survival of many species and ecosystems and threatening the long term conservation and sustainable use of these ecosystems and species; and WHEREAS, Americans have an opportunity to help reverse the tide of ocean degradation by establishing ocean wilderness; and WHEREAS, America's remaining wild places, and the species that inhabit them, merit protection based on their intrinsic value; and WHEREAS, the preservation of ocean wilderness, in conjunction with sustainable management policies that conserve our ocean life, can further the long term conservation of ocean life and marine biodiversity; and WHEREAS, the protection of ocean wilderness also provides spiritual, ethical, and economic benefits; now, therefore BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA: Section 1. Supports ocean wilderness to preserve and conserve our nation's marine life. Section 2. Supports the establishment of an open, participatory process to establish ocean wilderness to maximize benefits to local communities while meeting the nation's needs. Section 3. Preserves ocean wilderness and conserves ocean life, from the largest blue whale to the smallest plankton, for our benefit, the benefit of our great nation, and the benefit of future generations. Section 4. Urges federal, state, and other governmental bodies to commit to establishing at least five percent of the United States' ocean territory as wilderness. PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held on the 17th day of October, 2001.
