JOINT RESOLUTION MONROE COUNTY RESOLUTION NO. 05Q:19~~___ CITY OF KEY WEST RESOLUTION NO. ~4-49~ A JOINT RESOLUTION OF MONROE COUNTY AND THE CITY OF KEY WEST REITERATING SUPPORT OF THE MILITARY PRESENCE AT NAVAL AIR STATION KEY WEST AND ALL MILITARY BASES IN THE FLORIDA KEYS, AND SUPPORT THE EFFORTS OF THE MONROE COUNTY BRACC COMMITTEE CHAIRED BY COMMISSIONER HARVEY, MILITARY AFFAIRS COMMITTEE, THE KEY WEST NAVY LEAGUE, THE ASSOCIATION OF NAVAL AVIATORS, THE CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE AND VETERAN'S ORGANIZATIONS, TO PROMOTE THE MANY MILITARY ADVANTAGES OF THOSE BASES TO PREVENT THE CLOSURE OF THOSE BASES. WHEREAS, both Monroe County Board of County Commissioners and the Key West Ci ty Commission have, over the years, passed many resolutions in support of the Navy and other military operations in the Florida Keys; and WHEREAS, in addition to the official governmental recognition of the military importance, there has always been a great deal of grass roots support from the community such as the Monroe County BRACC Committee chaired by Commissioner Harvey, Military Affairs Commi t tee, the Key West Navy League, the Association of Naval Aviators, the Chambers of Commerce and Veteran's Organizations; and WHEREAS, approximately l,OOO Monroe County civilian residents work for the Department of Defense; and WHEREAS, approximately 2,000 military men and women are stationed in the Florida Keys; and WHEREAS, the military spends about 90 million dollars in the Florida Keys annually; and WHEREAS, military bases in the Florida Keys have long been considered strategically important to the Caribbean region and that importance was recently underlined during the Haitian and Cuban crisis of 1994; and wH:ERi!:N$~!i.tlHid~~t of operating the Naval Air Station Key West is reported it'o!.b~ ,Jess expensive than the cost of operating many other training f~cilities; now, therefore, 90: (d l( NVr '^ BY JOINT RESOL1TtION, WE THE COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY AND THE Cn'Y QF KEY WEST, do hereby show unanimous support to the udU~jJu dU ~ 03-IU Monroe County BRACC Commi t tee chaired by Commissioner Harvey, Military Affairs Committee, the Key West Navy League, the Association of Naval Aviators, the Chambers of Commerce and veteran's Organizations in their efforts to promote the importance of the Florida Keys' military bases to the nation, to Monroe County and to the City of Key West. The Military Affairs Committee efforts will be directed to ensure the retention of those military bases. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Senators Mack and Graham, Congressman Deutsch and Governor Chiles are all requested to assist the Military Affairs Committee by facilitating the accumulation of factual information that is needed to develop a high quality presentation for the Base closure and Realignment Commission. The Monroe County Clerk is hereby requested to provide a copy of the resol ution to: Senators Mack and Graham, Congressman Deutsch, Governor Chiles, Admiral Stanley R. Arthur, Vice Chief of Naval Operations, Mr. Charles P. Nemfakos, Deputy Assistance Secretary of the Navy for Force Basing & Infrastructure Requirements, and Capt. Munninghoff, Commander Naval Air Station Key West.
