A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZING AND SUPPORTING THE VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA, INC., CHAPTER 662 "PHOENIX PROJECT." WHEREAS, under the inspiration of Bill Collins and Larry Blocher, the Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc., Chapter 662, ("VV A") created the "Phoenix Project" to assist veterans who are homeless, jobless, suffering from substance abuse, and needing medical and administrative assistance (veterans "at risk"), and WHEREAS, utilizing personal assets and local and VV A donations, including cash, furniture, office equipment, materials, food services and labor, the Phoenix Project began its effort at the abandoned government missile site situated on forty-two acres of "excess" government land, and WHEREAS, in a short period of time, this model project has shown tremendous success in assisting veterans and their dependents with basic necessities, administrative claim processing, employment searching, counseling, and moral support to help the veterans restructure their lives and gain independence, and WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners hereby desires to recognize and support the worthy efforts of the Phoenix Project, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows: 1. The Board hereby acknowledges the invaluable assistance and extensive community service provided by the Phoenix Project and hereby supports this project in its efforts to receive a long-term license for the use of its present facility and in its efforts to obtain grant funding to continue its worthy endeavors. 2. The Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to forward a certified copy of this Resolution to the Governor, the Monroe County Delegation and the Monroe County Congressional Delegation to proclaim the Board's support of the Phoenix Project . PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of the Board held on the 21st day of February, 1995.
