Mayor Emeritus Wilhelmina Harvey '9i MR -2 Al0:46 RESOLUTION NO. 062-1995 DANS', , ,gUl::\!: ~1IJN~~~6t~fK?~l <;?F THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, IN RECOGNITION OF THE LATE JOSEPH C. WORTH. WHEREAS, Joseph C. Worth, an la-year resident of Key West. has passed away at the age of 71, and WHEREAS, Mr. Worth grew up in Switzterland, Florida, just outside Jacksonville, he served as a Sergeant during World War II specializing in anti-aircraft in the Army's air forces tactical center in Orlando, and he was a licensed airplane pilot since 1951, and WHEREAS, Mr. Worth helped his family run their orange grove until the War was over, and then went into business for himself and became a very successful contractor and land developer; he was the first contractor in Jacksonville to build low-income housing for the poor, and WHEREAS, after succeeding in land developing, Mr. Worth invested in fleets of ocean- going barges and tugboats and began underwater salvaging, followed by a lobster import business in the Caribbean, and WHEREAS, Mr. Worth was a long-time member of the International Oceanographic Foundation, he was a member of the National Geographic Society since 1959, and in 1966 he founded the International Underwater Explorers Society in the Bahamas, and WHEREAS, Mr. Worth and his wife moved to Key West in 1977 and bought the former Old Island Inn on Simonton Street, which was in ruins after a fire, and after five years of renovation, the 21,000 square-foot building became his private home called "Casa Antigua," one of Key West's most unique private residences, and WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners desires to recognize the late Joseph C. Worth for his extensive public service and his vast dedication to his community; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA. as follows: Section 1. The Board hereby adopts this Resolution as evidence of its regret and mourning for the passing of the late Joseph C. Worth and in recognition of his extensive dedication and vast public service to the people of Key West and Monroe County, Florida. Section 2. The Board hereby requests the Clerk to forward copies of this Resolution to Mr. Worth's widow, Mary Ann Worth, to express the Board's sorrow. PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of the Board held on the 21st day of February, 1995.
