P. ARTMAN, JR. WHEREAS, L. P. "Poly" Artman, Jr., a long-time resident of Key West, has passed away at the age of 81, and WHEREAS, Mr. Artman, who was born in St. Simon's Island, Georgia, move to Key West with his parents when he was three months of age, and WHEREAS, after high school, Mr. Artman graduated cum laude from Loyola University, attended post-graduate school at Emory University and the University of Florida, and graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in which he had served as a lieutenant communications specialists, and WHEREAS, Mr. Artman was editor of The Key West Citizen in the late 1930's and 1940's, and in 1946 he founded The Key West Star newspaper with his wife, the late Marie (Pat) Albers Artman; the business is still in the family and is currently known as Florida Keys Offset Printing and Publishing, Inc., and WHEREAS, Mr. Artman authored many great historical and tourist-related books, and he helped supply merchants throughout Key West and the Florida Keys with Key West gifts, souvenirs and post cards through his business Florida Keys Wholesalers, and WHEREAS, Mr. Artman was active in many civic organizations including the Key West Rotary Club, the Key West Jaycees, the Key West Chamber of Commerce, and the Downtown Business and Property Owners Association, and WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners desires to recognize the late L. P. Artman, Jr. for his extensive public service and his vast dedication to the community; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows: Section 1. The Board hereby adopts this Resolution as evidence of its regret and mourning for the passing of the late L. P. Artman, Jr. and in recognition of his extensive dedication and vast public service to the people of Key West and Monroe County, Florida. Section 2. The Board hereby requests the Clerk to forward copies of this Resolution to Mr. Artman's surviving brother, Norman Artman, and to his surviving daughters, Carolyn Blackwell and Diane Crockett, to express the Board's sorrow. PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of the Board held on the 21st day of February, 1995.
