I\OLHI\l.lfA RESOLUTION IN RECOGNITION MON~5rcgm4T~'tL~~F THE LATE WRIGHT LANGLEY WHEREAS, Wright Langley, a historian, publisher and island resident, passed away suddenly at the age of 65; and WHEREAS, Wright Langley was president of Langley Press Inc., and was co-author of a number of pictorial history books with his wife, Joan, and the late Stan Windhorn; and WHEREAS, Wright Langley was born in Tarboro, NC, grew up in Four Oaks, NC, and learned photography at an early age. He went on to Rochester Institute of Technology and in 1957, he received one of its first bachelor of fine arts degrees in illustrative photography; and WHEREAS, Wright Langley in 1958 married Joan Knowles, a sixth- generation Conch, daughter of Neil and Dorothy (Archer) Knowles; and WHEREAS, Wright Langley was an instructor in still photography for the U.S. Army at Fort Monmouth, N.J., for the next two years. In 1960, for his photojournalist thesis, he took the Key West turtle boat A.M. Adams from Key West to Grand Cayman and Nicaragua; and WHEREAS, Wright Langley in 1961 and 1962, was a photojournalism instructor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and in 1962 and 1963 became a reporter-photographer for the Raleigh Times in Raleigh, NC; and WHEREAS, Wright Langley earned a Master of Science Degree in journalism in 1964 from Boston University, and the following year moved to Key West to become a reporter for The Key West Citizen, and in 1968 became Key West bureau chief for the Miami Herald serving until 1975; and WHEREAS, Wright Langley, after a period as a freelance writer and photographer for newspapers and magazines, became Executive Director of the Historic Florida Keys Preservation Board. During his 15 years as director, Wright established the first book publication program among the Preservation Boards of Florida, and secured seed grants leading to multi million-dollar restorations of the San Carlos Institute, the Armory, the Bat Tower and Old City Hall; and WHEREAS, Wright Langley was actively involved in many special projects and community service efforts which included leadership of a nonprofit society to raise funds for preservation of the last tall sailing ship built in Key West, the cable ship Western Union; he served on the Little White House Advisory Committee, was a life member of the Key West Sculpture Garden Memorial Selection Committee, and was a member of the USS Maine Commission; and WHEREAS, Wright Langley leaves his beloved wife Joan Langley; his daughter Lisa; son Mark and wife Jo Ann; and his brother and sister-in-law, Rufus and Toni Langley of Raleigh, NC; his nephew and his wife, Mark and Dee Langley, of Raleigh, NC, and many, many friends to cherish his memory; now, therefore BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA: Section 1. The Board hereby adopts this Resolution as evidence of its regret and mourning for the passing of the late Wright Langley, and in recognition of his extensive dedication and vast public service to the people of Key West and Monroe County, Florida. Section 2. Mayor Emeritus Harvey forwards a copy of this Resolution to his beloved wife, Joan Langley, and family to express the Board's sorrow. PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held on the 20th day of September, 2000.
