WHEREAS, Joan Knight, passed away on August 29, 2000, at the age of 82; and
WHEREAS, Joan Knight was the daughter of Norberg and Emma Thompson,
and was born in New York City, July 14, 1918; and
WHEREAS, Joan was raised in Key West and attended St. Mary Star of the Sea
Convent School, and attended college at Mary Mount in Tarry Town, NY, Trinity
College in Washington, and Finch College in NYC; and
WHEREAS, Joan married Edward B. Knight in Key West on February 14, 1943,
and while her husband was serving in the farthest corner of the Pacific as a Naval
Aviator, she served in the volunteer motor corps during World War II, aiding survivors
of torpedoed boats and other emergencies; and
WHEREAS, Joan Knight was one of the people who met to form an active group
to preserve and restore the buildings and heritage of Key West, an organization later
known as the Old Island Restoration Foundation, and she also founded the Pelican
Path; and
WHEREAS, Joan was a long-time supporter and faithful member of St. Mary Star
of the Sea Catholic Church; and
WHEREAS, Joan Knight along with her husband, Ed Knight, were honored this
year as the 1999 Florence Spottswood Humanitarians of the Year. That is an award
named in honor of the woman who founded the Key West Chapter of the American Red
Cross in 1915; and that honor would underscore a lifetime of Joan's generosity and
community involvement, especially to youth organizations that provide positive
intervention and role models; and
WHEREAS, Joan Knight was synonymous for her limitless glvmg of time,
money and leadership to worthy causes in the community, and Joe Barker, Director of
Wesley House, stated, "She was a gentle soul, a gentle spirit in Key West that did an
awful lot of good but never wanted the spotlight shined on her"; and
WHEREAS, Joan Knight devoted her life to helping many, many people of all
races, creed or color, however, the true extent of her giving and caring remain as they
always were intended - done for the good they could bring, not for any publicity; and
WHEREAS, Joan Knight leaves her beloved husband, Edward B. Knight and
many, many close and loving friends to cherish her memory; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE
COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The Board hereby adopts this Resolution as evidence of its regret
and mourning for the passing of the late Joan Knight.
Section 2. The Board hereby requests Mayor Emeritus Harvey to forward
copies of this Resolution to her beloved husband, Ed Knight, to express the Board's
sorrow.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe
County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held on the 20th day of
September, 2000.
