Resolution 271-1995 Planning Department RESOLUTION NO. 271-1995 A RESOLUTION BY THE MONROE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS GRANTING THE DESIGNATION OF IIHISTORICAL AND CULTURAL LANDMARK II TO THE FLORIDA KEYS MEMORIAL ALSO KNOWN AS THE HURRICANE MONUMENT AND THE SURROUNDING TRIANGULAR SHAPED SITE OF APPROXIMATELY 1/4 ACRE. THE PROPERTY IS DESCRIBED AS FOLLOWS: GOVERNMENT LOT 1-2, SECTION 32, AND PART OF GOVERNMENT LOT 2, SECTION 33, TOWNSHIP 63 SOUTH, RANGE 39 EAST, TALLAHASSEE MERIDIAN, UPPER MATECUMBE KEY, MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, MILE MARKER 81. 5, AND THE REAL ESTATE NUMBER IS 00095080. WHEREAS, Florida Keys Memorial, as defined on the National Register Registration Form and summarized above, meets the criteria for designation of a IIHistorical and Cultural Landmark II as specified in Section 9.5-452 (a) & (c) of the Monroe County Code, Amended, in that the Florida Keys Memorial is associated with events of cultural, social, and historical significance to Monroe County; and page 1 of 4 HDHURRIC.05/TXTDR,071995 WHEREAS, the procedures for landmark designation set forth in Section 9.5-453 of the Monroe County Code, Amended, have been followed, in that: 1. The proposed designation was initiated by Mr. Jerry Wilkinson, Historical Preservation Society of the Upper Keys, in a letter to Holly Larson, Comprehensive Plan Manager, dated June 3, 1994, and Ms. Sharon L. Wells, Historic Florida Keys Preservation Board, in a letter to Holly Larson, dated June 15, 1994; and 2. The proposed address, and designation a narrative included a description boundary description, of the site and its structures; and 3. The application established the basis for the Florida Keys Memorial designation under Code Section 9.5-452, and included other evidence that supports the designation, as set forth on the National Register of Historic Places Registration Form, which documents the historic, social, and cultural significance of the Florida Keys Memorial; and 4. The application has been reviewed by the Historic Florida Keys Preservation Board, which recommends the Florida Keys Memorial for local historic designation, as evidenced in a page 2 of 4 HDHURRIC.05/TXTDR,071995 June 15, 1994, letter from the Board's Historic perservationist; and 5. The application has been reviewed by the Planning Staff, who recommends the Florida Keys Memorial for landmark designation, as stated in the staff report to the Monroe County Planning Commission dated April 27, 1995; and 6. The Monroe County Planning Commission, during a regular session held on April 28, 1995, has conducted a public hearing on the proposed designation, reviewed the request from Mr. Wilkinson and the recommendations of the Historic Florida Keys Preservation Board, and heard testimony from the public; and 7. The Planning Commission has voted at said public hearing to recommend to the Monroe County Board of Commissioners that the Board grant the designation of "Historical and Cultural Landmark" to the Florida Keys Memorial, aka the Hurricane Monument, as stated in Planning Commission Resolution No. P15-95; and WHEREAS, the Monroe County Board of Commissioners has considered the proposed designation and the recommendations of the Historic Florida Keys Preservation Board, Holly Larson, and the Planning Commission; NOW THEREFORE, page 3 of 4 HDHURRIC.05/TXTDR,071995 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA THAT: Florida Keys Memorial aka Hurricane Monument is hereby designated as an historical and cultural Landmark, as provided by Article VIII of the Monroe County Code. Amended. PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held on the 15th day of August , A.D. 1995.
