A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE CONGRESSIONAL

WHEREAS, the proposed Congressional budget cuts would reduce MEDICARE by
$270 billion - three times more than any MEDICARE cut in history, and
WHEREAS, the proposed Congressional budget cuts would reduce MEDICAID by
$182 billion, and
WHEREAS, the total proposed Congressional budget cuts would reduce Medicare
and Medicaid by $452 billion, and
WHEREAS, these cuts would double deductibles from their current levels, increase
premiums for seven years and increase co-payments for home health care, and
WHEREAS, the proposed cap on MEDICAID spending would cut $15 billion in
Florida through the year 2002, and
WHEREAS. this represents a 36% cut in Florida's MEDICAID spending by the year
2002, and
WHEREAS, 24,600 Floridians could lose their eligibility for MEDICAID long term care
benefits next year - number that could grow to 291.300 people by the year 2002 - a 64%
reduction. and
WHEREAS, the proposed MEDICAID cuts would result in a decrease of $64 million in
Monroe County alone through the fiscal year ending 2002, and
WHEREAS, . the proposed MEDICAID cuts would result in a decrease of $3.4 billion
in District 11, in Monroe County and Dade County combined, through the fiscal year
ending 2002; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE
COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1.
Urges you, as an elected official. to thoroughly examine the
detrimental effect these proposed cuts would have on the most densely populated
state in the union for vulnerable elders living on fixed incomes and that you carefully
study the proposed alternatives to these devastating reductions before casting your
vote to alter forever the lives of our nation's elders and Florida's most vulnerable.
Section 2.
The Board hereby directs the Clerk of the Board to forward certified
copies of this Resolution to the elected officials designated in Exhibit A attached hereto
and incorporated herein.
