A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMIS-
SIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, PROCLAIM-
ING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MARATHON MARINE
SANCTUARY.

WHEREAS, these reefs are known, appreciated and enjoyed by
millions of people from throughout the world, and
WHEREAS, these reefs form an essential foundation for our
tourist-based economy, and
WHEREAS, these reefs are part of the heritage, history and
culture of the Florida Keys, and
WHEREAS, the reefs lying in the waters directly offshore of
Marathon are known in particular for their exceptional natural
beauty, and
WHEREAS, it is the rightful wish of all true and honorable
citizens of Monroe County to protect, preserve and enhance this
precious, unique and irreplaceable natural wonder, now, there-
fore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the living coral reefs in and around
that area of Monroe County known as Marathon shall henceforth be
forever known as the,
MARATHON MARINE SANCTUARY
and that all persons shall act to protect, preserve and enhance
the living coral reefs in that area or forever suffer the
displeasure of the citizens and true friends of Monroe County.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, this 7th day of February, A.D. 1989.
