The City of Key West provides its own fire protection. The majority of the County is rural with a few suburban communities scattered throughout. At present we are continuing to work on completing many projects of which communications is of most concern. Due to the geographical make up of Monroe County, our difficulty is in the communications over 130 linear miles from Ocean Reef, in Upper Key Largo, down to Key Key West. The number of people and acres to be protected in the project area are: Lower Keys 26,415 acres 13,687 population (1980 census) Middle Keys 6,065 acres 10,288 population Upper Keys 25,525 acres 14,891 population 38,866 At present, Monroe County operates with ten (10) volunteer fire departments providing a combination of fire suppression and rescue service. It is anticipated that this service will continue. Should funds be made available through this grant, Monroe County will support 50% of the funding. This cooperative effort will afford the County's fire services much needed assistance in communications equipment. v. C> C ... o :x: 0.; 0' -'" ,..: '. . '.'2 "0 . ...........
