WHEREAS the Monroe County Sheriff's Office currently maintains
a Crime Laboratory which provides drug chemistry and latent
fingerprint analysis services, and
WHEREAS the cost of providing these services exceeds
$150,000.00 per year, and
WHEREAS the provision of these services is essential to law
enforcement in Monroe County, and
WHEREAS the State of Florida Florida Department of Law
Enforcement has expressed interest in assuming operational control
and financial responsibility of the Monroe County Crime Laboratory,
pursuant to ~~943.37, Fla. Stat., thereby eliminating the costs of
the laboratory from the Sheriff's budget while maintaining the
availability of vital services,
THEREFORE, BE IT NOW RESOLVED that the County Attorney is
hereby directed and the Sheriff is hereby requested, to negotiate
with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for the lease of the
existing laboratory facility consisting of approximately 1600
square feet located in the Lester Building and the Monroe County
Courthouse Annex in Key West at the rate of $1.00 per year for a

period commencing on or after October 1, 1994, until September 30,
1996, or for a longer period so long as the laboratory facilities
remain in their current location.
