The owner, a Mr. Bob Boling of Fort Walton Beach, has attempted to refloat the vessel on several occasions with no success. It is ny understanding that at this time he has exhausted his funds and has effectively abandoned the vessel. I also have been notified that the Florida Marine Patrol has completed a derelict vessel report for this incident. The vessel is presently damaging sea grass and a finger coral community in the location where it is resting on the bottom. In addition, there is reportedly up to several hundred gallons of diesel fuel still on board, so there is a clear potential for a pollutant spill. There is also the possibility that the vessel will move due to weather and block the Sunshine Key channel. Is there a possibility that vessel removal funds can be used to remove this abandoned vessel before it causes further injury to resources of the Florida Keys National Karine Sanctuary? We would appreciate any assistance that your program could provide to remove this potential threat to our Darine resources.
