Resolution 112-1986 ". Mayor Wilhelmina G. Harvey Commissioner John Stormont RESOLUTION NO. 112-1986 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE ACQUISITION BY THE PUBLIC OF CERTAIN LANDS IN NORTH KEY LARGO. WHEREAS, North Key Largo, Monroe County, Florida, is a mostly undeveloped island surrounded on all sides by natural areas of greatly recognized value, including: Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve, Key Largo Coral Reef Federal Marine Sanctuary, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Crocodile Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, Biscayne Bay-Card Sound Lobster Sanctuary and North Key Largo Hammocks; and WHEREAS, the undeveloped properties extend southerly from the Ocean Reef Club down to and including the Port Bougainvi11e and Garden Cove properties; and WHEREAS, the partially disturbed portions of Port Bougain- vi11e and Garden Cove would be considered ideal for the establishment of a multiple-agency scientific research and management center for the island of North Key Largo; and WHEREAS, the land of North Key Largo is a habitat for threatened and endangered species of plants and animals; and WHEREAS, the coral reef within the John Pennekamp State Park and the Key Largo Marine Sanctuary are the only living coral reefs in the continental United States; and WHEREAS, the coral reefs are the basis of a thriving tourist economy and recreational and commercial fishing industry in North Key Largo; and WHEREAS, the protection of the coral reefs begins with the land of North Key Largo; and WHEREAS, the health of the reefs is threatened by increasing sources of pollution through the development of the land of North Key Largo; and WHEREAS, the Monroe County Commission is concerned with the protection of both the coral reefs and the undeveloped land of North Key Largo; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Monroe County Commission hereby supports the acquisition by the public of the remaining undeveloped property in North Key Largo and urges the appropriation of public funds for that purpose.
