A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMIS-
SIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, REQUESTING
THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO
CONSIDER THE REDESIGNATION OF OLD CARD SOUND
ROAD (C-905 AND C-905A) AS US-lOR AS A NEW
SEGMENT OF THE AlA ROAD SYSTEM.
WHEREAS, at a regular meeting of the Board of County
Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, this Board did duly
consider the following six (6) factors regarding the Florida
Department of Transportation's proposed road widening/rebuild-
ing project of US-l for said 18 mile stretch from Florida City to
Key Largo; and
WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation is study-
ing options and is in the process of repairing the environmental
impact studies and proposes public hearings regarding construc-
tion options and possibly filling of wetlands beside US-lor
possibly building another two-lane bridge over Barnes Sound; and
WHEREAS, the American Automobile Association (AAA) in 1985
identified US-l from Miami to Key West, "One of the State's
deadliest roads," and the 18 mile segment is known as "Dead Man's
Stretch"; and
WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation has
proposed as an option the extension of the Florida Turnpike with
a toll road facility to pay for environmental mitigation costs;
and
WHEREAS, Card Sound Road is an important transportation
corridor of public access to the Florida Keys from the mainland;
and
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County,
Florida, desires Monroe County's legislative delegates in
Tallahassee and Washington, D.C. to assist in the accomplishment
of said options; and
WHEREAS, the "Monroe County Card Sound Bridge Revenue Bond"
issue should be paid off by March, 1988, with a current balance
due of $490,000 at a rate of approximately 2S,000/mo. (bond due
date is September 1, 1997); now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that:
1. The Florida Department of Transportation, during the
road widening/reconstruction project of US-l from Florida City to
Key Largo, is hereby requested to consider the redesignation of
the Old Card Sound Road (C-90S and C-90SA) as the "new" US-l if a
toll is placed on the new four land section of US-I.
2. The Florida Department of Transportation, during the
road widening/reconstruction project of US-l from Florida City to
Key Largo, is hereby requested to consider the redesignation of
the Old Card Sound Road as a potential new segment of the AlA
road system.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held
