Resolution 157-1994 Mayor London RESOLUTION NO. 157- 1994 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, REQUESTING THAT THE BATTLESHIP U.S.S. MISSOURI BE PLACED ON ACTIVE DUTY. WHEREAS, the last chapter of the United States participation in World War II was written with the surrender of the Japanese Empire upon the decks of the battleship U.S.S. Missouri, a ship which served gallantly throughout World War II, and WHEREAS, the said U. S . S . Missouri has recently been decommissioned by the United States Navy, and WHEREAS, in view of the battleship Missouri's unique identification of the power of the United States government which brought World War II to a conclusion and as a symbol of peace upon which the surrender of the aggressor Japanese Empire occurred, it is deemed appropriate that the said U.S.S. Missouri would be contained as a museum by the government of the United States for all of its citizens, and -7 ~ -T1 the w Z ::tJ r-', :r. battl~rp ;""Tl WHEREAS, the current plans for ~.S.s: -< -,' Missouri are to "mothball" and =- --= N WHEREAS, the importance of the said vessel wil'l be l~t in such an endeavor, ~ NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows: 1. That Monroe County's Congressional Delegation is requested to take action so that the United States government places the U. S. S. Missouri on active duty in the United States Navy in perpetuity as a symbol of naval power in World War II and that the said ship served, as does the u.s. Constitution, as a perpetual remembrance of the importance of naval power to the United States, and the world.
