RESOLUTION 184-1994
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF
THE WATER QUALITY PROTECTION STEERING COMMITTEE
REGARDING POLLUTION ABATEMENT AND HYDROPERIOD
RESTORATION PROJECTS IN THE EVERGLADES
AGRICULTURAL AND ADJACENT AREAS.
WHEREAS, the South Florida Water Management District, in
September 1993, raised property taxes to pay for the
construction of pollution abatement and hydroperiod
restoration projects in the Everglades Agricultural Area and
adjacent areas; and
WHEREAS, the South Florida Water Management District
announced that $21,800,000 would be raised annually for
construction of pollution abatement and hydroperiod :z", '&.
restoration projects for ten years, totaling $218,000,@0:::~n
nominal dollars over ten years; and ~;~ ~
WHEREAS, it is anticipated that the subject taxes .wi-ll lJ
raise more than $21,800,000 per year because of a growi~,_'_'-:tax -0

WHEREAS, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary-Water ~
Quality Protection Steering Committee approved a similar-:-
resolution at its May 19, 1994 meeting;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE CQUNTY, FLORIDA, supports the efforts of
the Water Quality Protection Steering Commi.ttee and further
requests that the Governing Board of the South Florida Water
Management District direct the spending of additional funds (any
amount over $21,800,000) to the following areas, in order of
priority:
1. To unfunded water quality research and monitoring in
the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Florida Bay and
adjacent areas.
2. Restoration of Florida Bay.
3. Retrofitting stormwater drainage that adversely
impacts Sanctuary waters.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of the Board held
on the 17th day of June , 1994.
