RESOLUTION NO. 209 -1988
A RESOLUTION BY THE COUNTY COMMISSION OF
MONROE COUNTY REQUESTING THE FLORIDA KEYS
MEMORIAL HOSPITAL TO REFRAIN FROM CLOSING THE
MORGUE LOCATED THEREIN; REQUESTING THAT IF
THE CLOSURE OF SAID MORGUE IS INEVITABLE THAT
MONROE COUNTY BE GIVEN AT LEAST SIXTY DAYS
FROM THE DATE OF THIS RESOLUTION TO MAKE
ARRANGEMENTS FOR AN ALTERNATE SOLUTION TO
SAID CLOSURE; DIRECTING THAT A COPY OF THIS
RESOLUTION BE SENT TO EACH INDIVIDUAL ON THE
FLORIDA KEYS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL BOARD AND TO
THE HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR.
WHEREAS, Monroe County has been advised by Mr. George Avery,
Administrator of the Florida Keys Memorial Hospital, that the
morgue located thereon will be closed on the 31st day of May,
1988; and
WHEREAS, there are no known facilities in Monroe County to
perform this function other than at the Florida Keys Memorial
Hospital; and
WHEREAS, such closure would cause serious problems to Monroe
County in that it serves a public function, particularly in the
performance of autopsies, required by law; and
WHEREAS, the threatened closure of said morgue, is being
done with very little notice and, therefore, causes great concern
and inconvenience for Monroe County; and
WHEREAS, if the Board of the Florida Keys Memorial Hospital
concludes, after due consideration, that such closure must be
done that at least an additional sixty days be granted to Monroe
County to make secondary arrangements for this vital service; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and County Commission of Monroe County
consider that said operation is a public function that is utterly
necessary for Monroe County and that to discontinue it at the
Florida Keys Memorial Hospital arbitrarily as has been indicated
would be against the public interest of this County; now, there-
fore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNTY COMMISSION OF MONROE
COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1. That the Board of the Florida Keys Memorial
Hospital be and is hereby requested to continue the use of the
morgue, located at said Hospital, for the benefit of Monroe
County and its citizens.
Section 2.
That if it be determined by the Board that it
must close said morgue that the County be given an additional
sixty days in which to make alternate arrangements for a morgue.
Section 3.
That the establishment of a morgue is a
County service of utter concern to all the people and is neces-
sary in the orderly function of County government.
Section 4.
That copies of this Resolution be forwarded
to each member of the Board of Trustees of the Florida Keys
Memorial Hospital, to the State Medical Examiner's Office, to the
Sheriff of Monroe County, and to the State Attorney.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held
