RESOLUTION NO. 242 -1988
A RESOLUTION DECLARING KEN SORENSEN AS MAYOR
EMERITUS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, Ken Sorensen aided in creating the various Jury
Districts, and
WHEREAS, Ken Sorensen had made the first improvements to
Harry Harris Park and created the first baseball field, and
WHEREAS, Ken Sorensen was the moving force in the creation
of the Upper Keys Circuit Judgeship and also the requirement
which abolished the necessity and requirement for jurors having
to travel from the Upper Keys and Marathon to the Lower Keys, and
WHEREAS, the Big Pine Key Park was created in the main as a
result of Ken Sorensen's efforts, and
WHEREAS, Mayor Sorensen was one of the moving forces in
creating the new districts, and afforded the Lower Keys an addi-
tional district up through and including the Big Pine Key area,
and
WHEREAS, Ken Sorensen lent great support to the referendum
which created the countywide TDC, and
WHEREAS, Ken Sorensen was instrumental in the actual pur-
chase of the old School Board Building located at 310 Fleming
Street, and
WHEREAS, Ken Sorensen was also very involved in the creation
of the Library located in Marathon, all of which was made possi-
ble by the pledge of the race track funds that made said bond
program possible, and
WHEREAS, Ken Sorensen was instrumental in the creation of
the Monroe County Industrial Development Authority, and also the
program whereby $50 million dollars was the issue to sustain the
funding of first time home buyers, and
WHEREAS, as a private citizen Ken Sorensen became President
of the nonprofit corporation which purchased and established
Mariner's Hospital in the Upper Keys, and
WHEREAS, as a private citizen Ken Sorensen became the
founder of the Upper Keys Sailing Club, a organization which
serves 200 families in the Upper Keys, and
WHEREAS, the County Commission of Monroe County does desire
that such representation of the County by Mayor Ken Sorensen be
recognized in perpetuity; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, that henceforth from this date Mayor Ken Sorensen
shall be known and shall carry the title of Mayor Emeritus of
Monroe County and all the honors and privileges related thereto.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board on the
21st day of June, A.D. 1988.
