RESOLUTION NO. 425-1988
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING
JAMAICAN HURRICANE RELIEF
VOLUNTEER RELIEF EFFORTS;
EFFECTIVE DATE.
THE NEED FOR
AND SUPPORTING
PROVIDING AN
WHEREAS, the Florida Keys are a community of islands which
were spared by Hurricane Gilbert, and
WHEREAS, the Caribbean island nation of Jamaica was dev-
astated by Hurricane Gilbert, suffering the highest death toll in
the Caribbean, and
WHEREAS, Gilbert left Jamaica without electricity, potable
water or crops, and caused economic damage estimated at $8
billion, and
WHEREAS, the winds and rains of Gilbert have left homeless
over half a million Jamaican people, and
WHEREAS, a volunteer relief effort in Monroe County is
underway to assist the Jamaican victims of Hurricane Gilbert;
now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the residents of the Florida Keys,
through their elected Commission, extend their heartfelt sympathy
to the people of Jamaica, and support the volunteers of "Florida
Keys Jamaican Relief" in their efforts to bring food, water,
medicine and supplies to the people of Jamaica.
This Resolution shall go into effect immediately upon its
passage and adoption and authentication by the signatures of the
presiding officer and the Clerk of the Commission.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
on the 20th day of September, A.D., 1988.
