A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE
NAVAL AIR STATION KEY WEST AND
CONTINUED OPERATION
OPPOSING BASE CLOSURE
OF
WHEREAS, the Department of Defense Base Realignment and
Closure Commission (B.R.A.C.C.) is scheduled to review existing
military facilities in 1995 and to make recommendations as to
which facilities shall be subject to closure; and
WHEREAS, it is important that Monroe County prepare for
this process and express a strong base of support for the
operations of Naval Air Station Key West; and
WHEREAS, the southernmost military base in the United
States is ideally positioned for military operations, and
current tensions and functional operations in the Caribbean
region demonstrate the continued necessity for the location of
military facilities in this area; and
WHEREAS, Naval Air Station Key West serves not only the
United States Navy, but also the other service branches of the
Department of Defense, and is home to Coast Guard Group Key
West, the Air National Guard, the joint anti-drug trafficking
task force, the air traffic monitoring center covering the the
Caribbean area, and the Army special forces diving training
center; and
WHEREAS, the favorable weather conditions and large
amount of unencumbered air space in Monroe County provide an
excellent location for training flights; and
WHEREAS, past closure of other military facilities in the
southeastern United States render continued operation of those
bases remaining even more vital; and
WHEREAS, the continued operation of Naval Air Station Key
West is vital to our local economy, and the facility itself is
operated in a cost-effective manner;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Monroe County Board
of County Commissioners as follows:
Section 1. The County Commission hereby expresses its
enthusiastic support for continued operation of Naval Air
Station Key West and expresses it opposition to base closure.
The County Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this
Resolution to the Congressional representatives of Monroe County.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners
of Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board
held on the 22nd day of Septermer , 1994.
