Resolution 541-1988
Commissioner Mike Puto
RESOLUTION NO. 541 -1988
WHEREAS, the use of weather satellites is insufficient to
provide hurricane information to residents of the United States
along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts and to residents of the
Caribbean Islands and Mexico; and
WHEREAS, aircraft assessments of tropical storms can provide
data beyond those obtained from satellites; and
WHEREAS, such data can be significant in decreasing the size
of the areas to be warned, with consequent benefits to those
populated areas affected by the warnings; and
WHEREAS, with rapidly increasing permanent populations along
the coastlines, many areas cannot be evacuated within the warning
times possible under the present meteorological state of the art;
and
WHEREAS, additional data and assistance to the meteorologist
are highly recommended for assessments of those areas to be
warned; and
WHEREAS, the additional data on wind speeds and pressures
furnished by aircraft at different levels in hurricanes are of
far greater significance to the structural engineer than the bare
data furnished by weather satellites; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, that the Board strongly recommends that
the use of aircraft for hurricane tracking in the above areas be
continued.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of
Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held
on the 18th day of October, A.D., 1988.
