THE WILHELMINA HARVEY CHILDREN'S PARK. WHEREAS, Monroe County has purchased the Tucker property on Big Coppitt Key for purposes of establishing a park in compliance with the County's Land Use Plan; and WHEREAS, Dona Merritt and Barbara Divoll developed and conducted a fund- raiser in the community to make the park truly a community park; and WHEREAS, Dona Merritt and Barbara Divoll obtained $4,800 in cash and $1,200 in pledges from the community for improvements to the property; and WHEREAS, the community, through Dona Merritt and Barbara Divoll, have voiced a desire to recognize the tireless efforts of Mayor Emeritus Wilhelmina Harvey on behalf of the citizens of Monroe County by naming the park after their esteemed Commissioner Harvey; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows: 1. That the Board of County Commissioners gratefully accepts the donation presented by Dona Merritt and Barbara Divoll at the November 23, 1994, meeting of the Board of County Commissioners; 2. That the Board of County Commissioners on behalf of the County citizens and taxpayers sincerely thank the Big Coppitt community for their contributions and especially thanks and appreciates Dona Merritt and Barbara Divoll for their hard work and community spirit in organizing and carrying out the fund-raiser, 3. That the County park to be situated on the site of the newly purchased Tucker property on Big Coppitt Key shall be named the Wilhelmina Harvey Children's Park; 4. That the County shall honor those conditions outlined in the November 28, 1994, letter to James Roberts from Dona Merritt, attached hereto as Exhibit A. CONDITIONS: 1) That the funds be used to provide whatever recreational equipment for the park is agreed to between the group known by the "Big Coppitteers", headed by Barbara Divoll (1305-294- 8154), and the Monroe County Parks & Recreation Department. 2) That any funds not used for equipment purposes for this park shall be designated for providing recreational equipment for the park known informally as "Arby Park" in Key Largo. 3 ) That these funds be considered as seed money for establishment of a permanent account by Monroe County for purpose of receiving ongoing private gift donations to County for community parks purposes. the the the 4) That the BOCC consider as a future discussion item the establishment of a Monroe County Community Parks Trust (possibly under the Land Authority or the Parks Department) for the purpose of encouraging joint private/public park development efforts .and which trust shal1 aggressively seek private donations of lands, funds, equipment and labor for the development and enhancement of community parks, green space and recreational activities on each and everyone of the Florida Keys.
