Resolution 266-1985 Mayor Wilhelmina G. Harvey RESOLUTION NO. 266-1985 A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE DESIGNATION OF THE FLORIDA KEYS AS COASTAL BARRIER ISLANDS. WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the County Commis- sion of Monroe County, Florida, that a study is now being made by the Department of Interior concerning the designation of the Florida Keys as Coastal Barrier Island, and WHEREAS, the Mayor and County Commission of Monroe County, Florida, take the position that such a designation for all the Florida Keys would be detrimental to the welfare of the Florida Keys, now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COUNTY COMMISSION OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, as follows: 1. That the Department of Interior and its study groups are hereby requested to refrain from recommending the main chain of islands of Monroe County, Florida, known as the Florida Keys, as Coastal Barrier Islands. 2. That only those keys in Monroe County, Florida, which are unbridged, undeveloped and are off shore of the main Florida Keys be considered for such designation. The Department of Interior is hereby requested not to recommend any such designation except in keeping with this particular paragraph. All information presently existing in Monroe County, Florida, that relates to this designation not only has inaccurate information, but many of the maps that have been furnished are completely erroneous and incorrect. This, together with the fact that the main chain of islands in Monroe County known as the Florida Keys have no characteristics whatsoever akin to what barrier islands formerly were, renders such designation improper, Such a study as concerns the main chain of islands in Monroe County would have a direct impact on the future welfare of Monroe County and the Florida Keys, should the same result in an improper designation. 3. That the study now being made obviously disregards the importance of those islands connected by U.S, Highway I, particularly as it affects the welfare of the citizens of the Florida Keys. 4. That copies of this Resolution be furnished and for- warded to Senator Lawton Chiles, Senator Paula Hawkins and Congressman Dante Fasce11, as well as copies being furnished to the Coastal Barrier Islands Study Group, Department of Interior. PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida, at a regular meeting of said Board held 20th day of September , A.D. 1985. on the BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA By: a~rman .~ (SEAL) Attest: / APP.
